water, vapor and heat coupled modeling in 2D/3D

Hello all,

Is TOUGH3 able to couple water, vapor and heat transfer in a  2 or 3 dimensional unsaturated zone model?

I mean to do 2D/3D vapor transport  modeling in semi-arid region with a atmosphere boundary on the top and free drainage or water table boundary on the bottom.

I found many hydrogeological simulation tools like HYDRUS 2d/3d, FELOW, HGS do not take vapor and nonisothermal fluid tranport into account at all.  HYDRUS 1D can do mentioned above process but only in 1 dimension. I don't know why.

Maybe EOS3 or EOS4 can do the modeling? And must be in applied in 2D/3D.

Thanks so much!

Very short answer: Yes, all TOUGH codes can do what you intend to do.

    Dear Stefan,

Thank you for the answer. A further question is:

In the above mentioned condition, whether TOUGH simply applies a PdV model assuming air is stagnant (always remain at atmospheric pressure), or pressure change induced air advection is considered forming a liquid-air two-phase flow model?

    Hao,

TOUGH2 uses a two-phase formulation with phase partitioning of air and water in the gas an liquid phase. Please check out the TOUGH manuals, which can be downloaded from the TOUGH web site at http://tough.lbl.gov/documentation/manuals.html .
