Disappearing gas phase during simulation of CO2 injection
Dear all,
I am trying to simulate an injection of CO2 into a brine saturated aquifer with Toughreact 1.2 and ECO2N EOS module (1D, radial). Everything works fine until the gas saturation Sg in the injection cell reaches full saturation (Sg=1, SG=1-SS approx. 0,95). Then instantaneously the gas phase in all the other cells disappears and the simulation prematurely stops. Also, the solid saturation in cell 1 (injection cell) reduces to 0 and only SG=1 remains. I have tried different solvers and also combinations with preconditioning options, but nothing works. Does anybody have an idea what might be the problem and how it can be avoided? Many thanks in advance!

Lennard,
Please submit your question to the TOUGHREACT portion of the Forum. You state that: "instantaneously the gas phase in all the other cells disappears"; this obviously does not make sense, so please check for an error message just before the final printout and also look for "NaN" - this may help better identify the cause of the crash. Finally, does it run in standard TOUGH2-ECO2N?
Sorry for not being able to give you a specific answer,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,
I still don't know the real cause for the crash, but the "practical" solution for the problem turned out to use Toughreact V2.087 instead of 1.2. There it runs (slowly) without any changes in the input files (except those changes needed for switching from 1.2 to 2).
