Water column above soil for infiltration processes

Dear Stefan,

I investigate infiltration processes to look after the most effective one for a specific area. For that reason I would like not only to change the infiltration beginning and ending but rather the water column above the soil (model). Is that possible? The water column is between 0.3 and 1.0m whereas the soil is about 30m thick.

Thanks in advance.

Sebastian

    Sebastian,

The water column height can be represented by the (over)pressure you specify in the infiltration element.

Thanks. But this value will be constant over the whole infiltration process? Is it also possible that the value will decrease to "model value" (infiltration stop) and after a certain time, the value is the same before (new infiltration process)?

    Sebastian,

    (Sorry for the late reply.)

If you have just a few discrete changes in the ponding head, simply stop the simulation, then restart after having changed either the prescribed pressure in block INCON (if you want to change the head), or reset the element volume in block ELEME (to "small" in case you want to stop infiltration, or to a large value if you want to restart infiltration).

Also, check p. 63 of the TOUGH2 User's Guide for a (somewhat tedious) way to specify time-dependent Dirichlet boundary conditions, or - in case you have iTOUGH2 - use the RESTART option or specify tables as described in Appendix 5.1 of the report iTOUGH2 Command Reference.

    Stefan
