TMVOC
Hello everyone. I want to learn something about TMVOC from everyone.I am using PetraSim 2022.1 with TOUGH2.1 (TMVOC) to model a toluene spill in the subsurface, including both the vadose zone and the saturated zone.
So far, I can simulate the leakage and migration of toluene (multiphase flow and transport) for a specified release period. Now I would like to know how to proceed in TMVOC to implement the natural attenuation of toluene in groundwater, that is, how to represent its chemical reactions and biological degradation processes (aerobic and possibly anaerobic) that reduce toluene mass over time in my model.
Any simple example, keyword name, or documentation reference would be very helpful.

under PetraSim you are using the original TMVOC version released in 2002. I invite you to read the user's guide (Pruess K., Battistelli A. (2002). TMVOC, a numerical simulator for three-phase non-isothermal flows of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures in saturated-unsaturated heterogeneous media. This version of TMVOC alllows you to simulate the degradation of VOCs using a simple first order decay law.
Thus, you cannot simulate the biodegradation following a Monod's kinetic nor distinguish between aerobic and anaerobic degradation depending on the availability of dissolved oxygen.
For these capabilities you must use the TMVOC version that is available in iTOUGH2 or TOUGH3, known as TMVOCBio. It includes capabilities for the biodegradation of multiple VOC under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions with kinetic rates limited by the concentration of VOCs (the substrates), of electron acceptors (like oxygen), and nutrients.
These capabilities are described in the user's guide ( Jung Y., Battistelli A. (2017). User’s Guide for Biodegradation Reactions in TMVOCBio. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Report LBNL-1005179), which you can easily find on the TOUGH home page. It includes a full description of input structure and a couple of sample problems.
