Effective or Total Porosity in TOUGH2 EOS1

Migrated from Rockware Support Forum:

Does TOUGH2 EOS1 assume total porosity or effective porosity for water?

Is there a built-in conversion from one to the other?

    Hi Jared,

Porosity is a material property and thus a user input - I'm not aware of a generally valid conversion between effective and total porosity that could be built in (please let me know if I'm missing something fundamental here). Looking at the governing equations solved by TOUGH, porosity shows up in the accumulation term, i.e., the change in fluid storage due to net inflows/outflows. I would thus assume it reflects effective porosity. Porosity also shows up in the heat accumulation term, where fluid in isolated pores or water bound to the solid indeed make a contribution to the total heat capacity - but this effect could be readily accounted for by appropriately adjusting the rock grain specific heat.
