Material balance in TOUGH-FLAC

Hello,

I have a question regarding the material balance in TOUGH-FLAC coupling.

Let's say that I originally had a porosity obtained from TOUGH as 0.3, and then after the FLAC calculation, my porosity increased to 0.301 by the mechanical deformation.

After that, when I went back to TOUGH with the FLAC-updated porosity, the fluid volume in place changed by the porosity change caused by the mechanical deformation.

Does the current coupling functionality have the solution for this material balance issue, or do I need to adjust the TOUGH INCON file by myself to maintain the material balance?

I would sincerely appreciate your answer.

Best regards,

Kyung Jae

    Hi Kyung Jae,

In our in-house version of TOUGH-FLAC, new porosity and permeability arrays are calculated in FLAC3D and transferred to TOUGH through a binary disk file (TOUGH source code has been modified).

If you are doing the coupling by restarting TOUGH at each time step, you should transfer new porosity array from FLAC3D to TOUGH using INCON file (and if applicable, permeability array in MESH file or INCON depending on your version of TOUGH).

Thank you for your answer, Keurfon.

If I change the porosity in INCON file (and permeability in MESH file) for TOUGH run as per the computation of FLAC, there is the fluid amount change by the porosity change.

To maintain the material balance, what other factors I need to change in addition to the porosity?
